ALMENA TOWNSHIP, Mich. — One person is dead after a fire Monday evening in Almena Township, according to a news release Tuesday.

As Van Buren County Sheriff’s Office deputies arrived to the fire in the 45000 block of County Road 653, they found an individual near the entryway of the home.

Smoke was billowing from the doorway and the home was clearly on fire.

Deputies, along with Michigan State Police, were able to escort the individual away from the home.

Another resident was reported to be in the house.

Deputies and troopers attempted to get the second resident to leave the house, but weren’t successful.

The Paw Paw Fire Department responded and began efforts to extinguish the fire and find the other resident.

That resident, a man about 60 to 65 years old, was found inside but was unresponsive.

Lifesaving efforts were performed but weren’t successful.

A Van Buren County Sheriff’s Office deputy was transported to Lakeview Emergency Room for smoke inhalation and was discharged.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
