WHITEHALL TOWNSHIP, Mich. -- Jaime and Sidney Ibarra of Shelby were speeding southbound on US-31 Friday morning, trying to get to Hackley Hospital in Muskegon in time for Sidney to give birth to their third child. The child made it, arriving right in the car miles from the hospital.
"The baby came before we could do anything," said Jaime.
Mom and baby boy were taken by paramedics to the hospital, and they are said to be fine.
"This is maybe the second time in my career that I've had a baby delivered along the side of the road," said one paramedic at the scene. "It's great to be part of someone's memory like that."
Ibarra pulled over about a mile north of White Lake Road, miles short of their destination. Their trip began at their home in Shelby. "Her water broke, and I said we have to get to the hospital," said Jaime. Sidney was on the phone with the hospital when she told her husband to pull over.
"I pulled over and the baby -- she already had him in her hands."
