School to honor Kalamazoo shooting victim with books, library

BATTLE CREEK, Mich. – Calhoun County Community High School is honoring a former employee who was one of the victims of a mass shooting in Kalamazoo this past February.

Mary Jo Nye was one of six people killed in the shootings that happened on the night of February 20th.  Nye was a teacher at the school and is credited with having started the school library.  The school says they are collecting donations to buy more books and will also be naming the school library after her.

The school says they’d like to have a ceremony in early May and would like to receive the contributions by April 29.

Nye was killed, along with Mary Lou Nye, Dorothy Brown and Barbara Hawthorne in the parking lot of the Cracker Barrel restaurant. Abigail Kopf was seriously wounded at the scene.  Richard and Tyler Smith were killed at the KIA dealership on Stadium Drive.  Tiana Carruthers was seriously injured at an apartment complex earlier in the evening.  Jason Dalton is in custody and charged with the murders and shootings.
