Grand Haven teen’s run at Spelling Bee ends

NATIONAL HARBOR, Md. – Grand Haven’s Lily Mears‘ run in the semi-finals of the Scripps Howard National Spelling Bee has ended.

Mears made it to the  Top 48 spellers.  12 spellers will move on to the finals.  The semi-finals are continuing on today.

According to the National Spelling Bee twitter feed, Mears misspelled the work “schefflera” this afternoon.  A “schefflera” is a type of shrubby plant.

Mears is 13 and is in 8th grade at Lakeshore Middle School in Grand Haven.
