U.S. Coast Guard & Ottawa County Marine Sheriff’s Dept. gives free boat inspections

HOLLAND, Mich. -- Two local departments gave back to the West Michigan boating community over the weekend.  The Ottawa County Marine Sheriff's Department teamed up with the U.S Coast Guard to give away free vessel exams for boats.

Several boaters took advantage of the generous opportunity Saturday morning at the DNR ramp in Holland.  It was all apart of an effort to check people's safety equipment on board, with no penalty if anyone was found missing some of the required gear.

Each boat and trailer that got the exam recieved a proof of inspection sticker that's good for one year.  This was the first event of it's kind with both the U.S. Coast Guard and the Sheriff's Department teaming up.  They say they're hoping to turn these inspections into an annual event.
