HILLSDALE -
Michael Sessions is rather young to be taking a nostalgic look back on his four-year term as mayor. He's 22 years old.
When Sessions was elected mayor of Hillsdale, Mich., he was, when elected, the nation's youngest mayor. His term is about to end, and he is not seeking reelection, but he is proud of his record, even if he is no longer the youngest mayor (the mayor of Muskogee, Okla., was 18 when he was elected in 2008).
"I ran a city manager search," he said.
Hillsdale's mayor will graduate next spring from Hillsdale College with a degree in history. And he still lives with his parents.
When Sessions ran for mayor in 2005, he was a write-in candidate, and it wasn't easy to be taken seriously. He was 18. Today, that's still a bit of a problem.
"We have a candidate for mayor that's running (now) that said he often wonders how old I am and if I still live with my parents. That's a cheap pot shot," said Sessions.
Hillsdale Councilman Bruce Sharp, however, has grown to respect America's youngest mayor. "When he first started out, he didn't know what he was getting into," said Sharp, "and now he's matured enough that he's made a very good mayor for the city of Hillsdale."
