KALAMAZOO COUNTY—
It happened April 25, 2009, in Texas Township. There were sixteen people inside the house when it caught fire. Four children, all under the age of seven, and one adult died.
Investigators determined the fire started on a mattress on the floor in the living room, and there were no smoke detectors inside the home. They say by the time the people inside the house woke up, the fire was already "at a dangerous and uncontrollable level." No obvious source for the fire, like a lighter or matches, was found near the mattress, but it could have burned to the point that it became unrecognizable.
