ZEELAND - After months of preparation and study, the students of the Young Aviation Club (YAC) take their first airplane rides in Zeeland.

The YAC was started by the West Michigan Flight Academy and is geared towards students K-12; teaching them about aviation and its involvement in human history. The program gives students a "hands-on" experience and strives to get them excited about math and science.

The plane rides are the first step in what is hoped to be an aviation career for the students.

"I'm not really sure yet, but I do want to be a pilot one day or be the person who talks about the weather so the other pilots can figure out how to get in the air," says YAC student Kiana Weatherspoon.

For many of the students, who are from Grand Rapids Public School, this was their first time being airborne.

Student Jabari Smith shared his feelings before the ride, "Lots of other people told me your ears pop when you get out and go into the air so they tell me it really really hurts that's one thing I'm nervous about." Afterwards, he had a different perspective, "it's really fun all the people out there you've got to try this its an excellent experience."

The West Michigan Flight Academy was founded in 2007.
