HAMILTON—
An Allegan County dairy farm is under investigation by the FDA and the Department of Justice for allegedly selling cows for human consumption containing illegal amounts of antibiotics. The Department of Justice is seeking a permanent injunction against Scenic View Dairy of Hamilton. They say the USDA sent the company at least eleven letters regarding illegal tissue residues, but the farm continued to sell the cows from three farms, including one in Fennville.
The complaint says illegal amounts of penicillin, neomycin, and sulfadimethoxine were found in edible tissues. Penicillin is used to treat bacterial infections, neomycin is a drug found most often in products like Neosporin, and sulfadimethoxine is used to treat conditions ranging from tonsilitis to salmonella.
