KENT COUNTY - Family members are remembering a mother from Rockford. Toni Hall was killed Wednesday morning in what police are calling a terrible freak accident. A case of being in the wrong place at the wrong time.

Toni Hall was driving with a friend to her daughter's house and for some reason she didn't take her normal route. Instead, family members say she headed west-bound on 10 mile road in Rockford. When she got past Je-ne-be Drive the terrible accident happened.

"It's being at the wrong place, there's no explanation for it," said Sgt. Steve Dabkowski. He has worked for the Kent County Sheriff's Department for 27 years and hasn't seen anything like it before.

A metal trailer came unhitched from a van that was heading in the opposite direction. The large piece of metal went airborne.

"The trailer went right through the west-bound vehicle's window striking the driver," said Dabkowski.

Police say Hall was killed instantly. Her SUV rolled several times before landing on the side of the road. Her passenger suffered minor injuries.

Police are still trying to figure out what went wrong. They believe the pin that held the trailer's hitch in place come loose.

"So there was no intent, no wrecklessness other than maybe not putting that clip on there that holds the pin," said Dabkowski.

Now, Hall's two grown daughters, grandchildren, and life partner are trying to cope with the sudden loss.

She lived just a few miles away from where she was killed. She worked out of her home, loved to fish and loved to make her family laugh. Now they're trying their best to keep her memory alive.

No tickets have been issued in the case. Police are handing over the information to the prosecutor's office to determine whether charges should be filed.
