ALLEGAN COUNTY - Fox 17 News has just learned the elderly man who was canoeing on the Kalamazoo River has passed away.

Just after one this afternoon, emergency crews were called to the Kalamazoo River near 5nd and 126th streets in the Allegan State Game Area near Fennville. The Fennville fire chief tells Fox 17, a man and his wife were canoeing down the Kalamazoo River, when somehow the man ended up in the water. The woman called 911.

After a brief search, rescue crews were able to locate the man and pull him from the water. The Allegan County Sheriff's Department identified the victim, 67-year old David John Barber from Gobles. His wife, Marilyn Barber was treated at the scene with minor injuries.

Police and fire crews say it was difficult getting to the location on the river because of the heavy marsh lands surrounding it.
