OAKFIELD TOWNSHIP - Two people were killed and five were injured in an accident that took place just before noon on 14 Mile Road near the Kent County-Montcalm County line.

The crash occurred at 11:56 a.m. Sunday on 14 Mile Road NE (M-57) just west of the intersection with Wabasis Avenue NE between Cedar Springs/Rockford and Greenville in Oakfield Township.

According to the Kent County Sheriff's Department, 52-year old Corine Dines of Cedar Springs was driving easbound when she swung out to pass another car. That vehicle was driven by 58-year-old Belinda Shockley of Rockford. Deputies said Dines went into the westbound lane and didn't see an approaching extended-cab pickup truck, which was forced to try to squeeze between the two oncoming cars. Dines' car then moved back toward its own lane, striking the westbound truck nearly head-on and pushing the truck into the other car.

Deputies said Dines died on scene and Shockley passed away as she was being transported by an Aeromed helicopter to the hospital. Five others suffered non-life-threatening injuries and were taken to Specturm Butterworth. Several of the injured were children.

Deputies said the truck and both cars all were totaled.

Courtland Township firefighters assisted the Kent County Sheriff's Department with rescue efforts at the scene.
