CHESTER TOWNSHIP -
One person died and three others received severe injuries in a two-vehicle crash after a car ran a stop sign Friday afternoon in Ottawa County.
According to Sgt. Steve Austin of Ottawa County Sheriff's Office Traffic Services, at 4:20 p.m. deputies responded to a report of a crash with injuries on 24th Avenue at the Wilson Street intersection in Chester Township.
Their investigation showed that Thomas Edwin Hammond, 61, of Sparta was driving a 2001 Honda Accord westbound on Wilson when he failed to stop at the stop sign at 24th and his car was struck in the passenger side by a 1999 Chevrolet Suburban that was southbound on 24th and driven by Michelle Ann Trissel, 38, of Conklin.
Trissel told deputies she couldn't avoid Hammond's car after it drove into her path. Both vehicles came to rest in a ditch at the intersection's southwest corner.
Hammond's car split in two. He was pinned inside, was extricated by emergency workers and was pronounced dead at the scene.
Trissel and two passengers in her SUV -- 8-year-old Carlee Bursma and 14-year-old Chelsee Bursma, both of Conklin -- all were transported to Spectrum Health Butterworth Hospital in Grand Rapids where Trissel was listed in critical condition and both girls were listed in serious condition Saturday.
Deputies said all four accident victims were wearing seat belts at the time of the collision and that alcohol was not believed to be a factor in the crash.
The accident remains under investigation by the Ottawa County Sheriff's Office.
