SOLON TOWNSHIP -
A Wyoming teenager died and another man was injured in a two-vehicle accident at the intersection of 17 Mile Road and White Creek Avenue on Saturday night.
The incident occurred at 10:25 p.m. According to the Cedar Springs Police Department, at this time of night the intersection is controlled by a flashing yellow light for east-west traffic on 17 Mile and a flashing red light for north-south traffic on White Creek.
Witnesses said that a red Jeep was northbound on White Creek and had stopped at the intersection before pulling out in front of a westbound Dodge pickup truck, which struck the Jeep in the front passenger-side door.
Rockford Ambulance responded with two units and transported the Jeep's driver and a passenger -- both men -- to Spectrum Health Butterworth Hospital in Grand Rapids.
The passenger -- believed to be a 19-year-old from Wyoming -- was pronounced dead soon after arriving at the hospital. The driver -- a 35-year-old from Rockford -- is currently hospitalized in serious condition.
The hospital still is attempting to contact the driver's relatives to help identify the passenger.
The pickup's driver -- a 33-year-old from Howard City -- was not injured.
Police said alcohol appears to be a factor in the accident. The truck's driver voluntarily submitted to a preliminary breath test and the results were negative for alcohol.
The Michigan State Police and fire-rescue units from Cedar Springs and Solon Township also assisted at the scene.
