EMMETT TOWNSHIP - A 51 year old man died after being shot by a Deputy with the Calhoun County Sheriff's office early Sunday morning.

Shortly after 1am the Michigan State Police at Battle Creek were requested to assist the Calhoun County Sheriff's Department investigate a fatal shooting involving an on-duty deputy.

Information from the Michigan State Police reveals that two deputies patrolling in the area of Beadle Lake and Columbia Avenue, east of Battle Creek in Emmett Township, were called to mediate an ongoing domestic dispute at a nearby residence.

When the deputies arrived, they were met by a 51 year-old man holding a knife. After repeated attempts to get the man to drop the weapon, he was shot by one of the Deputies, resulting in fatal wounds.

Emergency personnel responding to the scene were not able to revive the man and he died at the scene.

Investigators strongly believe alcohol played a significant part in the incident. An autopsy is scheduled for Monday at Sparrow Hospital in Lansing.

The names of the deceased and the Deputies involved are not being released at this time, but it is believed the man who died is in this mugshot, taken in 2006.
