HOLLAND—
It's taken ten years, but leaders at Holland's Camp Geneva say it was worth the wait. The popular summer camp recently completed a $16-million renovation. The camp was built in 1948 and hosted about 2,000 kids each summer. It can now host as many as 4,000 during the peak months. Camp leaders say the program worked well the way it was, but needed an upgrade. "We've got a 50-year-old camp here, and it worked great for generations of campers," said Dave Vanderwel, executive director. "But in these days, now the expectations are different."
The camp now features a splash pad, manmade pool, rock climbing wall, and updated cabins.
Leaders say improvements were necessary to meet demand. Over the last decade, scholarship requests have increased 400%. Just last year, Camp Geneva gave out nearly $100,000 in scholarship funds.
