MONTCALM COUNTY - Scott Vanzyl was the victim in a deadly hit and run accident Thursday in Montcalm County.

Vanzyl was hit on Federal Road south of Cannonsville Road north of the Village of Pierson.

30-year old Vanzyl was a father of four ranging from age ten to age one. There are three different mothers, one of them is Treasa Velt Kamp who says Vanzyl was an alcoholic and often depressed.

"He gets drunk all night every night, when he gets out of work and he just passes out and I don't understand why he was on the road," said Velt Kamp.

She saw Vanzyl around 10:15, he was drunk.

Sometime after that, a friend drove Vanzyl to a birthday party a few miles away.

Jon Harden was one of the last people to see him. He says Vanzyl was getting angrier the more he drank.

Vanzyl had health problems, family problems, and friends say he was losing his apartment.

"He was saying a bunch of crap like this was all bullcrap how he was losing his apartment and he didn't want to lose his apartment and how he was losing everything," said Harden.

Harden offered him a ride, but Vanzyl walked off.

The accident scene is two miles away, but it's in the opposite direction of his apartment. Friends wonder where he was headed.

Police wonder when the driver will turn themselves in.

"We're relying on someone coming forward," said Sheriff Bill Barnwell. "Even if the person who's out there that struck him didn't see him, now's the time to come back and report it. It only gets worse the longer it goes."

Friends are in the process of setting up a fund-raiser to help with funeral expenses and are planning to put out flyers to help look for the driver.

Police got several calls spotting the body around 1:00 a.m.

It was dark, but they're hoping someone saw something. Anyone with information that may be useful can call the Montcalm County Sheriff or Silent Observer.
