Grand Rapids -
With Thanksgiving just days away, Mel Trotter Ministries is gearing up to distribute hundreds of food boxes to needy people in West Michigan.
On Saturday, 800 boxes of the traditional Thanksgiving feast were prepared by volunteers. These meals include everything from the turkey and stuffing, to sweet potatoes and dessert.
For those in Grand Rapids who have pre-registered for their meals, they can pick them up from 10:00am to 5:00pm Monday at the Mel Trotter store at 555 28th Street SE. Food boxes will also be handed out from Mel Trotter stores in Belding, Sparta, and Middleville.
In addition to the boxes, Mel Trotter will host a community wide Thanksgiving Dinner on Thursday at 10:00am at the DeVos Place off Monroe, in downtown Grand Rapids.
Last year, more than 2,000 people came out to the annual event, which was a record turnout. It takes about 500 volunteers to pull off a massive project like that.
Mel Trotter houses about 250 men, women and children at the mission on a nightly basis. Every day, more than 500 people receive hot meals from the organization.
If you'd like to help out, you can still donate for the Thanksgiving dinner. Mel Trotter will do the same thing in another month when they host a Christmas dinner.
