HOLLAND - An Ottawa County Sheriff deputy was sentenced to probation Wednesday afternoon after pleading guilty to one count of reckless discharge of a firearm, a 90-day misdemeanor.

Deputy Ryan Huizenga originally was charged with careless discharge of a firearm causing injury, a two-year high court misdemeanor.

After the guilty plea, Judge Bradley Knoll sentenced Huizenga to six months probation, a $400 fine, and 80 hours of community service.

On March 11, Huizenga shot and wounded an unarmed GVSU student, Derek Copp, during a drug raid at Copp's off-campus apartment.

Huizenga has been working desk duty at the Sheriff Department's Fillmore Complex the past few months.

Undersheriff Greg Stegenga said he, the Sheriff, and Huizenga will meet in the next few days to discuss his return to normal status. A decision is expected in the next ten days.

A conviction under Huizenga's original charge would have prevented him from retaining his license under the Michigan Commission on Law Enforcement Standards. The lesser charge, Stegenga said, will play a role in their decision.

Last week, Derek Copp pleaded guilty to delivery or manufacturing of marijuana, a four-year charge. He'll be sentenced in August.
