KENT COUNTY -
For those who have ever been affected by 'end of life' or hospice care, it is a delicate and emotional time. The need for physicians and doctors who understand the 'end of life' process and how to make it comfortable for both the family and the patient is getting greater.
The elderly population across the country is growing, meaning the services of hospice providers are in high demand. However, hospice and palliative care is a relatively new field, and doctors admit they are ill-equiped to manage appropriate 'end of life' care in America.
In response to this growing need, Hospice of Michigan announced a partnership today with the Grand Rapids Medical Education and Research Center, and several other community hospitals and organizations, to form the Hospice and Palliative Care Fellowship in affiliation with the MSU College of Human Medicine.
The goal is to create a program that will educate and train physicians in hospice and palliative care. The program will ensure the Grand Rapids community has the best trained, most highly-credentialed experts in hospice and palliative medicine. Program leaders also expect people to come from around the United States to Grand Rapids to receive this specialized training.
Hospice of Michigan is establishing an endowment to support the fellowship. Right now they are a little more than halfway to their goal of $2 million.
