HOLLAND - The assessment phase of the damage from last Friday's storms is in full swing in Ottawa and Allegan Counties. The city of Holland taking the brunt of it; at least seven inches of rain fell during the storms. It flooded homes and buildings as well as washed away portions of several roads.

Congressman Pete Hoekstra held a press conference this afternoon on 32nd Avenue and Old Orchard Road; one of the worst washout sites.

The Congressman, along with Holland Mayor Al McGeehan and a few Ottawa County officials reminding people not to get their hopes up for financial assistance from the government.

Ottawa County has applied for disaster status with the state of Michigan, if Governor Granholm approves it, then it could move on to the federal government and President Barack Obama's presidential declaration. Although the funding would more than likely be for local infrastructure and not people's personal damage.

Mayor McGeehan believes the damage to his city could be in the millions of dollars, but the entire assessment of the area could takes days or weeks. The Western Theological Seminary in Holland has already reported damage of more than $500,000.
