Police in Ottawa County are investigating $2,500 worth of damage that was done to the "Big Red" lighthouse in Holland.

They think two to four kids broke into the lighthouse Wednesday night using a ladder. The building was being re-painted and the ladder was left outside.

After the vandals broke in they were able to gain access to the entire building. They threw paint all over the basement floor and tracked it all the way up to the third floor.

Police believe the vandals were kids because of evidence left behind and because there were no beer bottles or cigarettes left around the building.

Jon Meyers, director of operations for Macatawa Park, described the acts as reprehensible. He says it will take around 1,000 hours to fix the damage that was done. They will have to re-sand the floors, the walls and the ceiling to remove the paint.

Police say they have some leads. They hope to make the vandals clean up the mess themselves. Each vandal will also have to pay $2,500 in restitution.
