Should the teen face criminal charges for filing a false police report?

    • Our society is infatuated with stories about pedophiles. The news media jumped the gun on this one and should have done more investigating before airing this story. The man in the grainy video should sue the girls parents and Fox 17. Media FAIL!

NORTON SHORES - UPDATE: 2:00 p.m. November 25, 2009

Norton Shores Police say they are now investigating a possible "False Police Report." After our story aired, police say a witness came forward and said that's not really what happened.

Police say they interviewed 17 year old Erin Westrate again, and that she admitted she made up the story. A family member says Erin, who spoke with FOX 17 last night, has been asked by police not to comment.

Charges could be filed against Erin next week. Police are no longer searching for a suspect.

17-year-old Erin Westrate says she was bitten by a man who had been sitting in front of her at a showing of "The Twilight Saga: New Moon" at Cinema Carousel movie theater in Norton Shores.

Police say the incident happened Friday night, around 8:30. Westrate told police she and her friend were commenting on the film's actors when the man in front of them made sexual comments to the girls. Westrate remembers her friend saying, "I wish that he'd [the actor] bite me." But she didn't expect to get a response from the man in front of them. "The guy leaned back and was like 'Can I bite you?'" said Westrate.

When the movie ended, Westrate says the man wouldn't leave her and friend alone. That was when he allegedly attacked her. "We started to walk away and I got maybe two feet from my chair, and he pulled me backwards by my hair and bit me on the neck. And then he was just smiling at me in the creepiest way," said Westrate.

Police are asking anyone who saw the incident to call them. He's described as a white man, about 5' tall with short, dark spiky hair, in his 40's. Call Norton Shores police, 231-733-2691, or the Muskegon County Sheriff's Department, 231-724-6351.
