ADA TOWNSHIP - A 19-year-old from Ada died Friday night when his car was struck by another car that ran a red light at an intersection north of Grand Rapids.

Nathan Alan Niemeier was pronounced dead at the scene of the 11:26 p.m. Accident at Grand Rapids and Knapp.

According to the Kent County Sheriff Department, Niemeier was driving his 1991 Nissan eastbound through the intersection when it was struck by a 2001 Ford Taurus driven by 17-year-old Thomas John Helderop of Grand Rapids, which had run the flashing red light at the intersection and was traveling southbound.

Niemeier's car then struck a nearby house and flipped over.

A passenger in Helderop's vehicle, Nadia Last, 17, of Ada, complained of neck pain and was transported to Spectrum's Butterworth Hospital.

Helderop suffered head and leg injuries and also was taken to Butterworth.

The Kent County Sheriff Department said that alcohol did not appear to be a contributing factor in the collision and that the incident remains under investigation.

The Ada Fire Department assisted at the scene.
