SPARTA TOWNSHIP -
Last Saturday, the Carlson family was on their way to a dance recital when tragedy struck the family -- again.
"You wonder if we don't feel cursed," said relative Rick Stockhill. "I mean, it's amazing in a bad way that this has happened again, and you sure do ask the question why,"
Jane Carlson, 63, was killed in the accident Saturday. Her 40 year old son, Todd, was behind the wheel.
Todd is already a quadraplegic. The reason: an accident that took place 20 years ago near the same spot on M-37.
Saturday's crash happened on M-37 near Sparta Avenue.
Kent City/Tyrone Township Fire Chief Mike Rexford was at the scene of Todd's accident in 1989, and again, just two days ago.
"I immediately thought, 'H how much more can this family go through?'" said Rexford.
Jane Carlson had been taking care of Todd and his sister Shannon, who suffered a closed head injury in a car accident 10 months after Todd's.
"As we go forward, you see people wearing the bracelet WWJD. I was thinking what would Jane do?," said Stockhill. "And I think Jane would just roll up her sleeves, say this is what we've been dealt, and now we deal with it the best we can."
Jane's family says she lived life to the fullest, and touched so many people over the years.
Jane wasn't wearing her seatbelt. Her husband Mike and a family friend were seriously injured.
"Todd is right now on a ventilator; they're going to try and ween him off of it over the next few days," said Stockhill. "He has some additional fractures in his neck and back at this point. The doctors are optimistic there is no additional spinal cord damage."
Family and friends hope others learn from the accident to always wear a seatbelt.
