MARTIN TOWNSHIP - Police have identified a 14-year-old who drowned while swimming in an Allegan County lake Friday.

As was reported on FOX 17 NEWS AT Ten last night, an official with the Michigan State Police said a teenager had died after disappearing while swimming with friends near the public access site at Lake 16 in Martin Township at about 6:30 p.m.

The Allegan County Sheriff's Department today identified the youngster as Montrel Alonzo Jeffries of Shelbyville.

The 14-year-old was swimming with friends when he went under about 30 yards offshore. The Sheriff's Office Dive Team was called in along with sheriff's department deputies and Michigan State Police troopers. Divers were in the water within 40 minutes after receiving the call. After a 6-minute search, Public Safety Diver William Greene recovered Jeffries.

After he was removed from the water, paramedics from Plainwell EMS attempted to revive Jeffries and transported the teen to the Pipp Hospital emergency room. He was later pronounced dead at the hospital.

The sheriff's department said the incident appears to have been accidental, that no drugs or alcohol were involved, and that the incident remains under investigation.

The Dive Team was assisted by the Allegan County Sheriff's Marine Unit, the Martin Fire Department, Plainwell EMS, Wayland EMS, the Michigan State Police and the Allegan County Victims Services Unit.
