Driver Swerves To Avoid Deer And Hits Tree
DECATUR TOWNSHIP - A Marcellus woman is hospitalized after she swerved to avoid a deer and her car struck a tree and rolled over in Van Buren County early Saturday.

According to Sheriff Dale Gribler, at 12:20 a.m. Van Buren County Sheriff's Office deputies responded to a report of a rollover accident in the 34000 block of 88th Avenue east of County Road 669 in Decatur Township. Upon arriving they found a gray 2004 Chevrolet Venture lying on its roof just off the roadway's north edge and the driver, Lorraine Monica Stanek, 50, of Marcellus, trapped inside with numerous head injuries.

She was removed from the car by Van Buren Emergency Medical Services and the Decatur-Hamilton Fire Department. Stanek was transported by Van Buren EMS to Bronson Methodist Hospital in Kalamazoo where she is listed in fair condition Saturday.

Stanek told officers that she had been eastbound on 88th Avenue when a deer jumped onto the roadway, she swerved to the left, lost control, her car left the roadway and struck a steep embankment and then a tree, spun to the right and rolled over onto its roof.

Police said Stanek was wearing a seat belt and shoulder strap, that speed was a factor in the accident and that it was unknown whether alcohol was a factor.

The accident remains under investigation.
