GRAND RAPIDS - Cornerstone University has changed a ban on staff and faculty drinking that's been in place for 68 years.

In the past, employees at the university had to sign a lifestyle statement that promises that will not drink alcohol or use tobacco products. But on Friday, University President Joe Stowell announced there would be a change. Faculty and staff are now allowed to drink alcohol in moderation, but not on campus or in the presence of Cornerstone University students.

A university spokesman says the rule is in keeping with Cornerstone's policy to base all decisions on scripture.

"It's really pretty simple, the bible doesn't prohibit consumption of alcohol in moderation and so the policy in the past has been different than that," said Bob Sack.

Meanwhile, all Cornerstone students still must promise to abstain from alcohol even if they're 21 or older and do not live on campus.
