Is he a cop who's funny, or a comedian with a serious day job?

The answer is: both.

Michigan State Police Sgt. Duwayne Gill is "a state police officer by day, comic by night," he says. In fact, Gill has experience in uniform and undercover for the state and for the city of Detroit.Yet, he has played Dr. Grins at the B.O.B.

Gill's next big gig, however, is giving you grins during LaughFest, the 10-day comedy festival sponsored by Gilda's Club Grand Rapids, which supports cancer patients and their families.

"I lost my mother to cancer," says Gill, so his motivation is obvious for this upcoming performance.

Why does an officer of the law decide to try being an officer of the laugh?

"I wanted to do something totally opposite (from being a cop)."

Sgt. Gill will compete in the "Best of the Midwest" competition at Dr. Grins on March 16.
