GRAND RAPIDS -
City leaders in Grand Rapids are trying to figure out how they should regulate the sale and distribution of medical marijuana. Whatever they decide, it won't be easy.
A majority of people in Michigan voted to legalize making marijuana legal for medical use last year. Providers have to be licensed though the state health department. But after that, the rules are vague.
It's up to the Grand Rapids Planning Commission to figure out where people are allowed to sell the marijuana, whether it be clinics, pharmacies or private homes. One thing's for sure: the city does not want it sold in retail shops like the ones in California.
Medical marijuana advocates are frustrated there's so much confusion.
"They don't even know particularly what the law is, but they're going with what their opinion is, instead of the 62 percent of the voters who already made a decision," said Olon Tucker, a marijuana educator.
"If we're going to do this, we should do this through pharmacies, other places, but not out of homes," said Harold Hamilton with the planning commission.
Commissioners will hold a special meeting to discuss their options in the next few weeks.
