CALEDONIA -
For about 70 years, Camp O'Malley in Alto has been a place where inner-city kids can go and enjoy the great outdoors during the summer months.
Now, directors at the camp are concerned how they're going to be able to supply that atmosphere after the news they got last Friday.
Directors at the camp were told they're losing $46,000 in state funding because of budget cuts. The loss puts the last six weeks of camp in jeopardy, which means they'd only be able to open for about two weeks.
Directors are working on ways to cut back on spending, but they're also looking to the community for donations.
This isn't the first time Camp O'Malley has been impacted by cuts. In 2007, it actually shutdown for the year after losing more than $100,000 in state funding.
Organizers say if they can't come up with the donations needed this summer, many of the directors will end up dipping into a savings account.
About 500 kids attend the camp each summer. Camp O'Malley is run by the Grand Rapids Youth Commonwealth, and gets support from the Grand Rapids Police Department.
Anyone looking to donate is asked to call 616-233-9370 ext 106. Checks can also be mail to Camp O'Malley at this address:
