BRYON CENTER -
The Byron Center Board of Education agreed to permit Timothy Grider to resign at the end of the 2009-2010 school year, but the district will pay his full salary until then, because he is technically on administrative leave after he was arrested earlier this year.
Grider, 44, of Alto, was caught in March 2009 in the middle of a sex act with a 21-year-old woman who had previous arrests for prostitution. He served two days' jail time, paid a $1,000 fine, and was ordered to perform 80 hours of community service.
The agreement states that Grider's leave would be "for health reasons," and after his sick days were exhausted he would be considered to be on administrative leave.
Grider spent 15 years a a teacher of special needs children at West Middle School.
In his letter of resignation, Grider said he would "miss my colleagues and my students greatly" after being with the district for 19 years. The legal agreement provides for a letter of recommendation from Superintendent Dan Takers that refers specifically to Grider's "unprofessional conduct" that was "unacceptable" to the district.
After the arrest, a note from the district sent home to parents stressed that the incident did not occur on school property.
