BYRON CENTER - Arrest warrants have been issued in connection with an accident that killed a mother of three from Byron Center.

The warrants are for Michael and Lisa Marshall, for the April 17, 2009 accident that killed Jan Wever. She was walking on 108th Street near the intersection of Homerich when she was hit by a car. Sheriff's deputies say the car that hit Jan left the scene. Later, Lisa Marshall came to the scene and told police she was driving.

According to the Kent County Sheriff's Department, "After a thorough and extensive investigation, Sheriff Investigators now believe that Michael Marshall was, in fact, the driver of the vehicle when Janice Wever was killed. Lisa told the Deputies that she was the driver of the vehicle in an attempt to cover for the husband."

Within a week, Michael Marshall stepped down as Byron Center School Board President and said he was responsible.

Michael is charged with three offenses: Leaving the scene of an at-fault fatal crash, a 15-year felony, leaving the scene of a fatal crash which is a 5 year felony, and Negligent Homicide, a two year misdemeanor.

Lisa Marshall is charged with one count of accessory after the fact, a five year felony.

Both are scheduled to be arraigned in District Court in Cascade Township, Monday, June 8, 2009.
