Market Info
In March 1982, WWMA-TV went on air. In February 1983, a group of additional shareholders bought control of the station effective April 1, 1983. On August 15, 1983, the call letters changed to WXMI. In May 1989, a New York-based
company headed by Robert Dudley purchased the stock of WXMI.
In 1987, WXMI signed an affiliation agreement with the FOX Broadcasting Company, making WXMI a charter FOX television station.
In June 1998, Emmis Broadcasting Company of New York purchased the stock of WXMI. Emmis then traded WXMI to Tribune Broadcasting Company --- a leading media company with operations in television and radio broadcasting, publishing, education and interactive ventures.
In January of 1999, FOX 17 launched FOX 17 NEWS AT TEN it's first live television newscast. FOX 17 NEWS AT TEN was West Michigan's first prime time newscast and was 30 minutes in length, it's slogan would win over West Michigan television viewers, "At Ten It's News, At Eleven It's History." The program would later expand to a full hour.
In August 2006 FOX 17 launched FOX 17 MORNING NEWS. The program would later expand to four hours from 5 a.m. to 9 a.m. featuring News, Weather, Sports and Traffic updates.
In April of 2009 FOX 17 re debuted with a new logo, loosing the call letters WXMI. FOX 17 now offers West Michigan television viewers their local news in high definition. FOX 17 became the first West Michigan television station to offer television newscasts in HD.
FOX 17 is located in Grand Rapids, Michigan, which is in the 39th largest market in the United States. FOX 17's designated market area (DMA) is Grand Rapids, Kalamazoo and Battle Creek
